Fishing Reports

Week of September 1, 2008

Date: 9/4/2008 9:12:45 PM

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend.  The weather was great!  So, that being said, here comes tropical storm Hanna.  We don’t exactly know when she’s going to be here.  Unfortunately, it looks like maybe Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.  But, that can definitely change.  Please be prepared for that and everyone be safe!

STRIPERS – Stripers are schooling early in the morning and late in the evening with lots of fish being caught.  But, they are eight to sixteen inch fish – not many keepers are being caught.  Smaller bucktails seem to work really well for those fish.  It is a lot  of fun to catch them, even though there are not very many keepers.  The best bite for keeper fish seems to still be at night.  From Shull Island all the way to the dam, try free-lining live herring or even anchor down with down lines. Your chance of catching keeper size fish greatly improves after the sun falls.

LARGEMOUTH BASS – The bigger largemouth bass are being caught schooling with the stripers.  Just throw a zoom fluke out around the school instead of bucktails.  Yum Houdini shads also work well because they carry a little more bulk and cast farther.  For the shallower, smaller bass, try using firetiger roostertails or Smepps inline spinners.  Also try Zoom finesse worms, shaky head with the Zoom trick worm.  Early and late in the day, topwaters are working well, as are Rebel Pop R’s, Heddon Torpedos, Lucky Craft Sammy, and frogs.

Night fishing up in the rivers is also good.  Big Texas rigged worms and buzz baits are working well.  Flipping and pitching around docks and wood is also another option to try.  Good luck this week!

BREAM & SHELLCRACKERS - Try using small roostertails, Smepps inline spinners and beetle spins around docks and grassy areas.  Try crickets, red worms and wigglers on points and secondary points in eight to fifteen feet of water.  Use a Carolina rig with a very small weight.

CATFISH – The best fishing is at night!!  Try using cut herring, nightcrawlers, chicken livers, and Berekley gulp catfish baits.  Points and secondary points from 20 feet up to five feet.  If you’re up in the rivers, fish channel bends and flats.  Fishing around islands is also good.

Fishing should be very challenging again this week.

Let us not grow weary while doing good for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.  Galatians 6:9

The good news here on Lake Murray is that we can fish year round.  The bad news is that tropical storm Fay has everything mixed up.  High winds and much needed rain make it tough to fish.  It looks like Fay is going to be around all week.  So, hopefully, after Labor day weekend things will get back to normal.

Stripers - Stripers are being caught from Bomber Island up to the dam.  Trolling bucktails and crankbaits allows one to cover a lot of water.  But, the safe bet this week would be to free line live herring or even anchor down with down lines.  Night fishing has been great for weeks.  The chance of catching keeper size fish much improves after the sun falls.

Catfish -  Catfish are deep, but the shallow action begins at dusk.  Anchor down in about 15 feet of water on main lake points or secondary points in the big creeks.  Fan cast baits shallow and deep.  Cut herring, night crawlers, chicken livers, and Berkely gulp catfish baits all work great.

Bream and Shellcrackers -  Fishing for these has been great for awhile in water four to ten feet deep.  Secondary points are in the big creeks and pockets with some wood and grass in them.  Crickets, red worms and wigglers all work very well.

Largemouth Bass -  The FLW Tour last week pretty much showed everyone how tough this Lake can be in August - the winner of a million dollars on the final day not even coming in with a limit.  Try fishing deep points with Carolina rigged trick worms or finesse worms, early morning and late evening around docks or wood and flooded grass with frogs, floating worms and rebel Pop R’s.  Any top water lure should work.  Night fishing up in the rivers with big Texas rigged worms works well.  Also, noisy top water baits are great.

Fishing will be tough this week.

But, if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with patience.  Romans 8:25
